Driven by planning and local authority targets and the clients or end users requirements, as well as stormwater retention, amenity, health and social cohesion goals.
They usually consist of a mixture of hard and soft landscaping with lawns, water features, large shrubs and semi-mature trees.
Intensive green roof build-ups over roofs and podiums are designed to be trafficked and should only be installed on flat roofs.
Planting and Waterproofing
The build-up heights and weights will be dependent upon the type of planting specified, however, as a rough guide 300 to 1500mm are the typical depths and weights could be in the region of 400kg to over a tonne per sqm.
Due to the increased depth of substrate; intensive planting can be similar to ground-based planting; lawns, shrubs, planters and trees. However, due consideration needs to be given to the adequate provision of irrigation, orientation, aspect and exposure to ensure the best results from the planting chosen.
Installation and Maintenance
Blackdown Greenroofs' systems can be installed either by their installation teams or by Alumasc's nationwide network of Registered Contractors.
Intensive green roofs have higher maintenance requirements than extensive or a semi-intensive roofs. These maintenance tasks would be similar to those required for any ground based hard or soft landscaping elements.
Permanent irrigation systems incorporated into the scheme will also have maintenance schedules.
